Leaking Heat Pump in Cave Creek, AZ

While a small amount of condensation is normal, excessive leaking can indicate a serious problem. If left untreated, a leaking heat pump can cause extensive damage to your home and create expensive repair bills. Why is your heat pump leaking water, and what can you do about it? Read on to find out.

1. There Are Frigid Temperatures Outside

When the temperatures outside are cold, the coils in the heat pump can ice over. To defrost the coils, the heat pump runs a small amount of refrigerant through them. This refrigerant turns into a gas as it passes through the coils and takes with it any water that was on the coils. This water then drips out of the heat pump.

2. Clogged Condensate Drain Line

The condensate drain line is responsible for carrying away any water that has been collected in the unit. If the line becomes clogged, it can cause water to back up and leak out of the unit. There are a few things that can cause a condensate drain line to become clogged, including dirt and debris buildup and algae growth. Algae can grow in the damp environment of the heat pump, and it can quickly block the drain line. It is important to have your drain line cleaned on a regular basis. If you do find that your condensate drain line is clogged, you should contact a professional for help.

3. Dirty Air Filters

Heat pumps rely on a continuous flow of air to function properly, and dirty air filters can restrict that flow. As a result, the coils in the heat pump can freeze, causing water to build up and eventually leak out. To fix the problem, simply clean or replace the air filters.
