Heater New Year’s Resolution Checklist
If you aren’t actively working on keeping your heater in great shape, you could probably be getting far better results from the appliance. With the right upkeep and consistency, you could keep your monthly bills as low as possible and get several extra healthy years from your heating system. Here are a few resolutions you should adopt.
1. Change the Air Filter
If you’re going longer than a month without checking your air filter, you’re putting your heater at risk. When your HVAC filter accumulates too much dirt and dust, the resulting clog can wreak havoc on your heating unit. The heater needs an open pathway to pull air through the filter so that it can redistribute the heated air to your home. To keep your heater at peak efficiency and prevent breakdowns, check the filter on a monthly basis, and replace it whenever it’s dirty or clogged.
2. Conserve Heat
A heater that’s running all day every day is going to wear out very quickly. Its efficiency will decline, and malfunctions or breakdowns will become more likely. If you can find ways to keep more heat inside your home, your heating system will be able to rest more often. One way to do this is by keeping your curtains closed whenever it’s cold outside. Windows are a major source of heat escaping, but curtains do a good job of preventing that. Of course, open them up to let the warmth inside when it’s sunny. Another good option is to install attic insulation. Heat rises, so having a barrier between your home and your roof helps conserve heat.
3. Schedule a Tune-Up
Scheduling maintenance for your heating system at least once a year is extremely important. After one of these tune-ups, your heater will be more effective, more efficient and less likely to experience problems. Staying on top of these professional visits is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your heater.
